Six Sigma - Productivity Improvement Basics
Six Sigma was developed at Motorola and popularized by General Electric refers to a method and a set of tools that utilize statistical analysis to measure and improve an organization’s performance, practices, and systems with a prime goal of identifying and eliminating variation to improve quality.
Six Sigma is a useful problem-solving methodology and provides a valuable measurement approach. Six Sigma simply mean a measure of quality that strives for near perfection. It is a disciplined, for eliminating defects in any process, covering manufacturing and transactions, as well as products and services. The fundamental objective of the Six Sigma methodology is the implementation of a measurement based strategy that focuses on process improvement and variation reduction through the application of specific techniques.
There are two Six Sigma processes: Six Sigma DMAIC and Six Sigma DMADV, each term derived from the major steps in the process:-
DMADV Methodology:-
This methodology consists of five steps:
Define --> Measure --> Analyze --> Design -->Verify
Define: Define the Problem or Project Goal that needs to be addressed.
Measure: Measure and determine customers needs and specifications.
Analyze: Analyze the process to meet the customer needs.
Design: Design a process that will meet customers needs.
Verify: Verify the design performance and ability to meet customer needs.
DFSS Methodology:-
DFSS is a separate and emerging discipline related to Six Sigma quality processes. This is a systematic methodology utilizing tools, training, and measurements to enable us to design products and processes that meet customer expectations and can be produced at Six Sigma Quality levels.
This methodology can have the following five steps.
Define --> Identify --> Design --> Optimize -->Verify
Define: Define what the customers want, or what they do not want.
Identify: Identify the customer and the project.
Design: Design a process that meets customers needs.
Optimize: Determine process capability and optimize the design.
Verify: Test, verify, and validate the design.
All Six Sigma processes are executed by Six Sigma Green Belts or Six Sigma Black Belts, which are then overseen by a Six Sigma Master Black Belts, terms created by Motorola. Six Sigma proponents claim that its benefits include up to 50% process cost reduction, cycle-time improvement, less waste of materials, a better understanding of customer requirements, increased customer satisfaction, and more reliable products and services. It is acknowledged that Six Sigma can be costly to implement and can take several years before a company begins to see bottom-line results.
Six Sigma has evolved into a business strategy in many large companies and its importance in small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) is growing every day. In fact, the results are fast and much more visible in smaller companies than in larger corporations.
